May and June in Fort Lauderdale are the sweet spot — locals call it shoulder season. Spring breakers are gone, the snowbirds are heading home, the beaches feel calmer, and the weather is dialed in: mid-80s, low humidity, and predictable 4 PM thunderstorms that pass in 30 minutes. Restaurants relax their hours. Hotels drop their rates. The water is the perfect temperature for swimming. Here's what's worth your time.
Hurricane season starts June 1, but in real life nothing usually happens until late August. So May and early June are the calm, gorgeous part. Below are the major events, the venues worth booking ahead, and the kid-friendly stuff. Save the specific weekend dates from each venue's site — these events run yearly but exact dates shift.
Hyundai Air & Sea Show
The biggest event of the season. Two days of military aircraft flyovers, parachute teams, and tributes along the beach. Free to the public. Hundreds of thousands of people. Locals stake out spots from 8 AM; we recommend showing up later and grabbing a spot at one of the beachfront restaurants with a view (S3, Casablanca, Pelican Landing). Kids love the jets — pack ear protection for under-5s.
Hard Rock Live (Hollywood)
Major touring artists pass through almost every week — comedy, rock, country, R&B, Latin. Capacity is intimate (~7,000) so no seat is far from the stage. Check their calendar the week of your stay — there's almost always something good. Bonus: the casino, the guitar-shaped hotel, and the famous swim-up bars are all in the same complex if you want to make a night of it.
Broward Center for the Performing Arts
Three theaters under one roof. Touring Broadway productions, the Florida Grand Opera, the Symphony of the Americas, and one-off comedy nights. Great option if you've got rain in the forecast and want something elevated. Family-friendly matinees on weekends.
Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS)
The single best kid-friendly attraction in Fort Lauderdale. Three floors of hands-on exhibits, live alligator and snake touches in the Florida Ecoscapes wing, a full-dome IMAX theater (the IMAX dome show is usually the best one in the area). Plan 2-3 hours minimum. Toddlers love the kids' play area; teens love the IMAX.
Sea Turtle Nesting Walks
Sea turtle nesting season starts in May and runs through October — loggerheads, leatherbacks, and the occasional green turtle. Gumbo Limbo runs guided nighttime walks where you watch a nesting mother lay eggs. Limited slots; book the moment they open enrollment. One of the most unforgettable things a kid can experience in South Florida.
Pride Fort Lauderdale
One of the largest Pride celebrations in Florida. Centered on Wilton Drive (a 15-minute drive from Jonathan's House), with a major parade, a beachfront day at Sebastian Beach, and bars/restaurants going all-out for the weekend. Family-friendly during the day, party-focused at night. Even if you're not part of the community, it's a great cultural week to be in town.
Bonnet House Museum & Gardens
Perfect rainy-day or hot-afternoon backup. The estate's main house and grounds are a quirky preserved-in-time piece of old Florida — monkeys still live in the trees. Guided tours every hour. Kids surprisingly love it; the grounds feel like a treasure hunt.
Butterfly World
The largest butterfly farm in the world. Walk through massive screened aviaries where thousands of butterflies land on you. Also includes a bird aviary, hummingbird zone, and bug museum. Best for kids 3-10. Half-day stop.
What to skip in May–June: any boat-rental company that charges peak winter pricing — rates should drop 25-40% in shoulder season. Also skip the major Las Olas restaurants Saturday nights at 8 PM — go at 6 or 9 instead, walk in, no waits.
Two seasonal things to know: (1) Hurricane season starts June 1 — buy travel insurance if you're worried, but historically nothing of consequence happens before August. (2) Stone crab season ends May 1, so don't show up at Joe's Stone Crab in late May expecting their signature dish. They're closed.
The 4 PM rule: May and June afternoons get a brief, intense thunderstorm around 3-5 PM almost daily. It's tropical, it's predictable, and it passes in 20-30 minutes. Plan beach mornings, lunch indoors, and back outside by 6 for the best skies of the day.
